Set the goal and cadence
Start with your availability, experience, and certificate/rating goal. A consistent schedule is encouraged, while the plan remains realistic for work, family, and budget.
Simi Valley sits between Ventura County and the San Fernando Valley, giving its residents reasonable access to both Camarillo Airport and Van Nuys Airport. Students from Moorpark, Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Thousand Oaks, and West Hills often evaluate both options when starting flight training.
Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) offers a controlled airspace environment with a live tower, ILS approaches, and proximity to complex Los Angeles Basin airspace. Simi Valley students training at KVNY gain experience with Burbank Class C coordination, LA Class B transitions, and busy VFR corridors — preparation that Camarillo training does not always provide.
At Accelerated Flight School, there is no pressure to compare or choose the closer option if a more productive training environment serves you better. We let students make informed decisions and support their training goals wherever they are in the program.
From Simi Valley the natural path is the 118 east through the Santa Susana Pass and into the West Valley, then south to Balboa and the field. It is a straightforward drive that keeps Ventura County students inside a single, predictable corridor.
Crossing the pass gives you a sense of terrain that becomes valuable aloft. On early flights you will recognize the rugged Santa Susana foothills, the Chatsworth reservoir, and the open western edge of the Valley — features that anchor your navigation as you practice headings, altitudes, and position reporting to the tower.
All flying is done in the KVNY fleet of Cessna 172 Skyhawks and a Piper Warrior II, and the controlled, active environment at KVNY is great for night work as you build toward the certificate. There is no prepaid package; a Discovery Flight is $199.99 for one person if you want to start simple. Call or text 424-493-2761.
Good flight training is built around the student, not a preset package. At Accelerated Flight School, instructors care about progress and use a plan that connects each Simi Valley-area lesson to the FAA/ACS standards for your goal.
Start with your availability, experience, and certificate/rating goal. A consistent schedule is encouraged, while the plan remains realistic for work, family, and budget.
Preflight briefing, aircraft handling, radio work, and a focused debrief give each session a purpose. The next lesson follows the skills already demonstrated.
Ground knowledge, maneuvers, and decision-making are developed together. The instructor identifies what still needs practice instead of treating a checkride as a shortcut.
For Simi Valley, with students also joining us from Moorpark, Chatsworth, Porter Ranch students, Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) offers an active Los Angeles general aviation environment where aircraft control, tower communication, and airspace awareness can grow together. Our flight school pairs that environment with transparent, pay-as-you-fly planning and no large upfront commitment.
As checkride readiness approaches, the school plans examiner coordination early and targets a checkride within 1–2 weeks after training is complete when examiner schedules, weather, and eligibility allow. This is a planning target, not a guarantee: independent DPE availability and checkride outcomes remain outside the school's control.
Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States — and one of the best environments to earn a pilot certificate.
KVNY has a live tower, ILS approaches, and year-round high-traffic conditions. You learn real-world radio communication from lesson one.
Training here means working with Burbank Class C, LA Class B, and diverse terminal area procedures — preparation for flying anywhere in the country.
The San Fernando Valley's inland location provides consistent VFR training conditions, particularly compared to coastal marine-layer airports.
From KVNY you can fly cross-country to Santa Barbara, Camarillo, Bakersfield, Big Bear, Brackett, Long Beach, and beyond — building real navigation skills.
No commercial airline traffic competing for runway time. KVNY is a dedicated GA airport built around pilots like you.
FAA Designated Pilot Examiners (DPEs) are available in the Van Nuys area for all certificates and ratings.
From your first discovery flight through your commercial certificate and flight instructor rating — all based at Van Nuys Airport.
Accelerated Flight School is built around a straightforward principle: efficient, structured training that respects your time, your money, and your goals.
Every lesson objective maps directly to the FAA's Airman Certification Standards — the exact document your checkride examiner will use. No filler flights.
You are never wondering when you will be ready. Your instructor tracks your progress against checkride standards and gives you a clear picture at every stage.
Your instructor debriefs every flight with specific observations. What you did well, what needs work, and exactly what your next lesson will address.
No large training loans required. No large prepaid blocks. You schedule and pay per lesson, keeping your investment proportional to your progress at all times.
No runaround, no scripted upsell sequences, no inflated hours. Our instructors teach because they believe in the mission of aviation training done right.
Train twice a week or twice a month — your schedule, your pace. The instruction quality does not change based on how fast you progress through the program.
